Martha Graham and Imogen met at a dinner in Santa Barbara in 1931. It was there that they decided to have a photo session the very next day, at Martha Graham's mother's farm, not far from Santa Barbara. The photographs were all taken outside in the mid day sun; she opened the barn doors wide, and photographed Martha in front of them, allowing the shadows to fall into black. This double exposure was taken in the camera -- taking two shots of Martha on the same sheet of film.
