This print is exceptional in that it is in pristine condition, with no defects in the print surface, or emulsion layer. Printed later, the photograph is made with Imogen's early skills that she employed to make portraits of people: the use of natural light, employing a simple black background and taking the photograph with a large format camera.

Imogen was drawn to stong graphic forms, photograhed against a simple background.
She often went out into the garden and brought a black cloth or board, using it as a backdrop to simplify the image while enabling her to use natural light to photograph the plant. She did not rely on artificial light to accomplish her goal of capturing the plant in the right light; instead she relied on waiting for the right light to record her image.
